“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105

God has spoken to man since creation and His life-giving words are recorded in the Scriptures as the light that directs the path of the believer’s lives.  Throughout the Bible, God’s word is spoken of as being a light of men. “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:3-4).

Even though the Bible clearly teaches us that the Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light for our path, many make the decision to stumble in the darkness rather than to let the light of God’s Word lead our way.

Picture two rooms, one is dark and a person is scrounging on the floor for some crumbs to eat when next door there is a room full of light and a banquet to delight on. Where do you want to be? And how do we get there? Here are some questions for us to ponder:

  • When we get up in the morning, do we make the decision to open the Bible first thing and start the day filled with God’s Word?
  • Do we meditate on God’s Word during the day?
  • Do we seek answers to our decisions in God’s Word?
  • Do we regularly and actively participate in a Bible study with other believers?

As born again Christians we are called and commanded to be the light of the world. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16). We are to be the stewards of God’s Word and to reflect His light so others can also see and be saved.

We need to ask ourselves: How can we expect to be the light of the world if we ourselves are spending the majority of our time stumbling around in the darkness? The answer is that we need to read Scripture, the Light that will guide us. We need to repent of our sins (darkness) and ask God to change us to show us His way through His illuminating Word. Once we do that we can be molded each day more and more into the image of Christ, who is the light of the world. “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” (John 8:12)

The decision is ours to make, are we going to do it our way or God’s way? Are we going to choose heaven or hell? Jesus himself told us: “that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” (John 3:19-21)

The more we learn about God and His love, the less we care about the so-called pleasures of this world. It really is amazing how God works and how He transforms sinners into saints when we live and breathe the Word of God and let Him be the light to our feet and a light to our path.

The Bible is not meant to be read only once a week, or once a month, or once a year, it is our daily sustenance, it is the way we are nourished to become strong Christians to run the race with perseverance and to proclaim and share the Gospel with power.

We need to understand that there is nothing more foolish than to try and navigate through this dark world without the Word of God, without the Light of the world shining out before us, lighting our path and showing us the Way. Jesus is the “Way” (John 14:6) and He is “the Light of the world.” (John 9:5)
