GOD PROTECTS HIS CHILDREN – 1 John 4:4

1-john-4-vs-4

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4

This verse gives comfort to the saints, the true children of God. Therefore we do not have to fear of being drawn or persuaded by false prophets and antichrists, since we belong to God. The Holy Spirit that indwells in us is greater than he who is in the world, which is composed of Satan and all of his fallen angels, demons and allies.

The true believer is born of God and has God’s power unto salvation as their resource for victory. They are enlightened by the Holy Spirit and therefore have discernment of truth from error. They are like the Bereans of Acts 17:11 that search the Scripture and do not let themselves be lead astray. They have victory over the enemy as they rely on the Holy Spirit who abides in them instead of depending on the world system.

As a result of being saved, believers have the indwelling Holy Spirit of God in them rather than Satan, who is behind the scenes working through his demons and conveying counterfeit messages thru false prophets.

This verse is one of the most reassuring promises in the Bible for the believer. Because “we are of God” and because He is in us through the Holy Spirit: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

Therefore; if you are in Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit is the One who is greater in you. And when we have the greater One living in us we have victory, because He is the One who causes us to triumph in every circumstance of life if we listen and obey Him.

The word overcome means to conquer, prevail, triumphed, have victory. Just like the Lord had ultimate victory as He assumed the throne in heaven to bring about the end of the age. “See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed” – prevailed or overcome (Revelation 5:5). So He gave us power to triumph and overcome also.

Paul writes to the Romans affirming: “For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!” (Romans 5:17)

When we are of God, we are “born of God and overcome the world” – and the one who overcomes the world is “only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:4)

Just like the Lord Jesus has overcome the world we too will overcome and have victory over the world. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

With the power that indwells in us, we are victorious over those who sadly are driven to embrace false antichrist doctrines and worldly philosophies, because: Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God (James 4:4). Those are the people who “love the world” (1 John 2:15-17) and seek to take captive the people of God. “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8)

The believers, on the other hand, are not to be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good, (Romans 12:21) and free them with the mighty “weapons of our warfare,” which are the Word of God and prayer. “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

We are also to: Take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:13-18)

For those walking in this truth, victory is assured, they do overcome the evil one. This means the Christian has no place for fear. We have many spiritual enemies, but not one of them is greater than God’s Holy Spirit who lives in us; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
